Many celebrities have reacted after Naomi Ackie opened up about being pressured to change her appearance to succeed in Hollywood.
First up, Viola Davis said, “The things we are expected to change just to be considered for a role. It’s exhausting.”
Next, Gabrielle Union said, “And this is exactly why representation behind the camera matters too.”
Next, Keke Palmer said, “So disgusted”
And finally, Taraji P. Henson said, “So many of us have stories like this. Naomi deserves so much better”.
Naomi said a casting director told her not to be filmed from the right because of the scar on her neck. Afterwards, she started worrying about that side whenever she was on camera.
She also described struggling to get through auditions while wearing her natural hair. Her manager suggested trying wigs with a softer curl, when Naomi was already concerned about damaging her hair through repeated styling.
Honestly, I find that upsetting. She wanted advice on progressing as an actress, and instead was being told that parts of her appearance needed changing or hiding.
I also saw that Naomi recalled being told, “Never let anyone film you on your right side,” and said she was shocked by it.
