Ope Sowande has reacted after Sian Welby turned down his offer of a date live on This Morning.
Ope was showing Sian and Dermot O’Leary Halloween costumes and decorations when she spotted a pumpkin-shaped handbag she liked.
He offered to bring it to her and suggested bringing it along for “a little date”.
But Sian quickly told him, “I’m a taken woman.”
Honestly, I think he was trying to be charming, but getting that answer on live television must have been embarrassing. There was also no way of quietly moving on when Dermot was standing there ready to make a joke.
Ope immediately apologised, and Dermot teased him, saying, “Once a Love Island boy, always a Love Island boy.”
I thought Sian handled it nicely. She made it clear she wasn’t available without making him feel worse, then encouraged viewers who liked him to go and find him.
That probably helped make the moment less awkward. He’d apologised, and she seemed happy to laugh about it rather than leave him standing there regretting opening his mouth.
Now Ope has commented underneath a post about the exchange, writing, “Oh well”.
I like that response. He tried, it didn’t work, and he doesn’t seem to be taking it too personally.
