Ariana Grande has reacted after Cynthia Erivo addressed criticism of their friendship during the Wicked press tours.
Cynthia said people questioned why they were so close and picked apart their reactions whenever they cried, laughed or showed affection in interviews.
Honestly, I think some of the discussion went too far. You can find an interview awkward without deciding you understand the entire friendship from how they behaved in it.
They became close while making the films, so them being emotional about sharing that experience doesn’t seem strange to me.
Speaking to The Guardian, Cynthia said some people had “become psychologists from their couches”. She also felt that showing less emotion would have given people something else to criticise.
Cynthia addressed stepping in when a fan approached Ariana on the Singapore red carpet too. She said her instinct was to get him away from her friend and disliked being described as Ariana’s guard.
Now Ariana has responded underneath a post about the interview, leaving two exclamation marks.
I read that as her backing Cynthia’s comments, and I agree. They shouldn’t have to change how they act together just to satisfy the fans.
