Jenna Ortega has spoken out after Sony cancelled Klara and the Sun’s planned cinema release.
The film was expected to open in over 2,000 cinemas, before that was reduced to 880. It then made just over $701,000 on its opening weekend, and the Spanish release has now been scrapped following poor reviews and low commercial expectations.
Jenna stars alongside Amy Adams and Natasha Lyonne, so it’s a disappointing outcome for a film with such a recognisable cast.
Honestly, I can understand Sony being reluctant to spend more promoting a film that’s already struggling. But I feel for everyone who worked on it, especially after waiting so long for audiences to see it.
A source has now said: “Jenna is disappointed by the uncertainty surrounding the film’s release. She put a lot of work into the project and was really looking forward to audiences finally seeing it. She’s particularly frustrated because it’s been such a long wait already, and she worries the film won’t get the attention it deserves.”
I can see why that would be frustrating. She can promote the film and stand by her performance, but whether it reaches cinemas is ultimately out of her hands.
Before you go, I wanna know… should Sony have given it a chance in Spain, or do the opening numbers justify cancelling it?
