Many rock musicians have reacted after Donnie Iris passed away at the age of 83.
First up, Bret Michaels said, “Pittsburgh lost a legend today. Donnie was the real deal. Rest in peace, brother.”
Next, Mick Jagger said: “Forever a legend. We lost an amazing guy.”
Next, Joe Grushecky said, “Heartbroken to lose Donnie. He meant so much to the Pittsburgh music scene.”
And finally, Kevin Raleigh said, “So many great memories of sharing the stage with Donnie. What an incredible voice”
Just weeks earlier, he was still performing. At his final concert in Pittsburgh on September 28, Donnie sang seated after receiving treatment that same day.
Honestly, I find that incredibly moving. He was going through treatment and still wanted to spend that evening singing for the people who’d supported him.
Donnie first found success with the Jaggerz. Their song “The Rapper” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.
Donnie retired from performing in early October. I found it sad that his final goodbye to the stage came only weeks before his passing, and I hope he’s resting in peace.
Before you go, I wanna know… which song of his is your favourite? And which will you be replaying today to honour him?
