Jimmy Carr has responded after being criticised for defending Lindsay Clancy.
I saw that Jimmy argued that people were judging Lindsay without considering the mental health struggles she may have experienced after having kids.
Her team said she was experiencing postpartum psychosis, a serious mental health condition, and argued she couldn’t be held responsible for what happened. The other side disputed that, and the people deciding the outcome couldn’t agree, leaving the case unresolved.
Honestly, I think we should be able to discuss serious mental illness without people assuming we’re excusing what happened. Someone’s state of mind matters, even when the circumstances are upsetting.
But three children have passed, so I can understand why people feel strongly. I think Jimmy needed to recognise that too.
Now he’s replied underneath a post about his comments, writing, “How will I cope after finding out that someone is offended by what I said?”
To me, he’s saying the criticism hasn’t bothered him. But I don’t think sarcasm helps the point he was making. Some people might have genuine concerns about what he said, and it seems like he’s dismissing everyone.
