Britons Told To Remove Air Conditioning Units During UK Heatwave

Britons are being told to remove air conditioning units from their homes during the UK’s heatwave.

It emerged that some homeowners have been ordered by councils to remove air conditioning units because of planning rules linked to energy use and net zero policies. The issue has sparked criticism as parts of the UK face temperatures close to 40 degrees.

That made things even more controversial because some homeowners spent thousands of pounds installing the units, only to be told they must take them back out. In some cases, councils argued that air conditioning should only be considered after passive cooling methods, like opening windows and shading, have been explored.

Obviously, people are saying that the planning rules are making it harder for people to stay cool during increasingly extreme summers, while councils argue the decisions are based on existing planning policies rather than a nationwide ban on air conditioning.

Ironically, the country’s own climate advisers recently warned the UK will likely need much more air conditioning in places like hospitals, care homes, and schools as temperatures continue to rise in the coming decades.

I think this shows how difficult it is to balance climate goals with keeping everyone cool. If heatwaves are becoming more common, people are naturally going to want ways to keep their homes safe and comfortable.

Before you go, I wanna know, should councils be able to stop people installing air conditioning?
